Tips for keeping your computer healthy.
- Maintain the hard drive. This should be done once a month. Click on
My Computer, then right click on the hard drive ( Drive C). Go to Properties. There will be 5 tabs, under General there is a disc cleanup
tool. Under Tools there are tools for error checking and fragmentation.
Click on Defragment Now, when the new window opens, click on Analyze. The
computer will tell you if the hard drive needs to be defragmented or not.
Then click on the Check Now tool. When the new window opens, check both
options, and start the scan. This tool checks the hard drive for errors and
bad sectors.
- Have a quality anti-virus, anti-spyware program or programs. Both Norton and McAfee have good anti-virus programs. For spyware, I recommend
Spy Sweeper. It is the best anti-spyware program I've found. Keep these
programs updated and scan your computer AT LEAST once a week.
- If you want extra security online, you can go with internet security
software. Both Norton and McAfee make programs for this too. You can usually
find both anti-virus and internet security in one program or a bundle; this
is cheaper than buying these programs individually. If you pay bills online,
I would recommend getting Window Washer; this program overwrites sensitive
information before deleting it, making it undetectable to hackers.
- Keep the operating system updated. This will keep with your computer
updated with the latest security protection. You can set your computer to be
updated automatically. Click on Start>Programs>Windows Update. This will
take you to the update page where you can update your software and setup
your computer to automatically updated.
